Social Networking

Summary / Quick Tips

Social Networking is a low cost marketing tool for small businesses. Use it wisely and it can outperform paid advertising.

Here are our top 10 tips for social networking:

  • Social networking is a time consuming activity. Be prepared to spend hours joining websites and setting up your profiles and then spend a small amount of time every day making new contributions.
  • Pick a small number of websites and see which ones generate the most traffic. Drop ones that don't perform for you and keep trying out new ones.
  • Have a well designed and interesting personal profile that highlights your business, and include links to your website.
  • When adding postings or comments, make your contribution interesting and relevant to the topic. Don't blatantly sell your products or promote your business and don't try to mention you business on all your contributions.
  • Add interesting or funny content to get people's attention. If they appreciate your contribution they are more likely to visit your profile or website for more information.
  • Don't be shy, invite people from your target market to be your friend. Also invite people who are popular or very active within the community. They may be influential with other members.
  • Don't be too critical or argumentative with other members. Remain neutral and try to help by offering advice and information.
  • Don't duplicate your content on different social networking sites, people who are members of numerous sites may pick up on this. You will loose your credibility if members think you are only there to sell. Don't cut and paste anything!
  • Know the site rules and respect them, to avoid getting banned!
