Press Releases

Summary / Quick Tips

Publishers expect press releases to be a certain format. If you don't format them properly you may not get taken seriously.

Writing an effective Press Release

Here are some press release writing tips:

  • Keep it simple and to the point.
  • Have a great headline.
  • Include a strong call to action for the reader, e.g. "Visit our website for further details: www.ContrastWebSolutions.co.uk", or "Order now by calling 0000 0000000" .
  • Try to be different. Ask yourself, would it catch your eye if you were flicking through the publication?

How to structure a Press Release

Here are some tips on how to structure your press release:

  • Try to keep it to one A4 page. Give journalists just enough information to get them interested and then they will contact you for more information.
  • If you have to go onto further pages, make sure all pages are numbered.
  • Use 1.5 line spacing.
  • Use a minimum of 11pt font.
  • Use standard and clear font such as Arial.
  • Type PRESS RELEASE as a header.
  • Always date the release and indicate when it needs to be released to the public.
  • The headline should be in capitals. Make sure it instantly conveys the nature of the story. If they just read your headline and come up with a clever or witty title for the story, it is more likely to be printed.
  • Write the release in the 3rd person rather than saying, I or we.
  • Avoid using exclamation marks.
  • Paragraphs should be simple and short. Try to keep each paragraph under 60 words long.
  • Include contact details at the foot of the release for more information.
  • Include a short summary of your company background on a separate page.
  • Write Ends when you have finished your last paragraph.
