Press Releases

Summary / Quick Tips

Get to know the publications that are relevant to your business and the people who work for them.

Take your time with this exercise and do it before you write your press release so you are aware of any submission deadlines.

Research Publications

Start by researching the various magazines and newspapers that cover your sector. Look at how they are structured, the style of writing and the kind of content they contain. Your press release is more likely to be printed if it is a good fit for their publication.

If the publications differ in style and content, you may need to write separate press releases tailored for different publications.

Build a record that outlines the details of each publication such as content, readership, submission deadlines and publication frequency.

Gain Media Contacts

One of the key requirements within PR is to build good relationships with the editors / journalists within your sector. For example, if you sell sports equipment, you will need to build relationships with the sports journalists for newspapers and magazines.

Start by getting the name and contact details of the editor for each publication, this is usually located on the inside cover of a magazine. You can also check on the publication's website if they have one. However, I would recommend that you call the publication and ask to speak to the editor or someone in the editorial team. You can then introduce yourself and your company and ask them to confirm who would be the best person to send your press release to. You should also ask them when their print deadlines fall and add these details to your publication record.
